Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main trends and provides a clear overview. You have selected key features, such as the growth of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics, and supported these with relevant data points. However, the overview is slightly limited; while you mention the film club, you could have provided a more comprehensive summary by noting the overall diversity of trends (some increasing, some stable, some declining). The data is generally accurate, although the statement that the film club is 'expected to top the list in the coming years' is a prediction not supported by the graph, which only shows data up to 2020. Stick strictly to the provided information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used effectively to group related information, such as the trends for individual activities. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'In 2000', 'By contrast', and 'Finally', which help guide the reader through the data. However, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, the sentence structure in the third paragraph is slightly repetitive, relying heavily on simple lists of figures. Using more varied linking phrases to compare the activities would improve the flow and cohesion further.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Terms like 'participants', 'figure', 'rose', and 'fell' are used accurately. There is an attempt to use some variety, though the vocabulary remains somewhat functional and lacks more sophisticated collocations or descriptive synonyms for trends. For instance, instead of repeating 'increased' or 'rose', you could use terms like 'experienced a surge' or 'witnessed a gradual climb'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is appropriate for an academic report, though it does not yet demonstrate the flexibility required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical issues, such as the comma splice in the third paragraph ('...most popular acitivity, this figure fell...'). A semicolon or a full stop would be more appropriate here. You demonstrate good control over basic structures, but the range of complex grammatical forms is somewhat limited. To improve, try incorporating more varied subordinate clauses or passive constructions to describe the data. Despite these minor errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally functional.
