Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph provides data about the number of participants for five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia, for the period of twenty years: 2000 to 2020.

Overall, three activities showed an upward trend, while the table tennis category stabilized, and the amateur dramatics class witnessed a downward trend throughout the period of two decades.

Firstly, the film club slightly declined from 64 participants in 2000 to around 60 in 2005 and then fell to 60 in 2010. Additionally, the number of martial arts participants dropped from 37 in 2000 to 31 in 2005 before increasing to 39 participants in 2010. Moreover, the amateur dramatics category increased slightly from 27 in 2000 to 29 participants in 2005. In 2015, the amateur category faced a decline and stayed at 20. In addition, table tennis participants increased from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2010 and remained the same in 2015. From 2000 to 2005, there was no participation in musical performances, but there was a sharp increase in the number of participants to 12 in 2010.

In 2015, musical performance surpassed table tennis and jumped to about 17 participants, while martial arts surpassed amateur dramatics and moved to approximately 36 participants and reached about 52 at the end of the period. Film club followed the upward trajectory from 2015 to 2010 and climbed to 65 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided data to support your points. However, there are significant inaccuracies in your reporting of the data. For example, you state the film club 'slightly declined' from 2000 to 2010, but the graph shows a clear upward trend during that period. Furthermore, your description of the amateur dramatics trend is inconsistent with the visual data provided. While you cover all categories, the misinterpretation of the figures prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference your written summary with the graph to avoid factual errors, as accuracy is a key component of Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Additionally,' and 'In 2015' to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by the factual inaccuracies mentioned in the task achievement section. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring that the logical flow between sentences is supported by accurate data, as the current inconsistencies make the overall narrative somewhat confusing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upward trajectory,' 'stabilized,' and 'surpassed.' There is some repetition of the word 'participants,' which could be varied with synonyms like 'attendees' or 'individuals.' While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some word choices are slightly awkward, such as 'amateur category faced a decline.' Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but more precise collocations would elevate the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While musical performance surpassed table tennis and jumped to about 17 participants, martial arts surpassed amateur dramatics.' There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the period of twenty years: 2000 to 2020' (which is slightly redundant) and minor issues with preposition usage. However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or conditional clauses, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
