Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph provides data about the number of participants for five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia, for the period of twenty years: 2000 to 2020.

Overall, three activities showed an upward trend, while the table tennis category stabilized, and the amateur dramatics class witnessed a downward trend throughout the period of two decades.

Firstly, the film club slightly declined from 64 participants in 2000 to around 60 in 2005 and then fell to 60 in 2010. Additionally, the number of martial arts participants dropped from 37 in 2000 to 31 in 2005 before increasing to 39 participants in 2010. Moreover, the amateur dramatics category decreased slightly from 27 in 2000 to 29 participants in 2005. In 2015, the amateur category faced a decline and stayed at 20. In addition, table tennis participants increased from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2010 and remained the same in 2015. From 2000 to 2005, there was no participation in musical performances, but there was a sharp increase in the number of participants to 12 in 2010.

In 2015, musical performance surpassed table tennis and jumped to about 17 participants, while martial arts surpassed amateur dramatics and moved to approximately 36 participants and reached about 52 at the end of the period. Film club followed the upward trajectory from 2015 to 2020 and climbed to 65 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends. You have successfully identified the upward and downward movements of the various activities. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting. For example, you state the film club 'slightly declined' from 64 to 60, but the graph shows a more complex fluctuation. Additionally, you mention the amateur dramatics category decreased from 27 to 29, which is a contradiction in terms. While you cover all categories, the precision of the data reporting needs improvement to reach a higher band. Ensure that your descriptions of the figures align strictly with the visual evidence provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by trend. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' to link your ideas. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the progression within the body paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure helps the reader follow the information easily. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that the logical flow between sentences is more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upward trend', 'stabilized', 'witnessed a downward trend', and 'surpassed'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as describing a change from 27 to 29 as a 'decrease'. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is occasionally lacking. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but to achieve a higher score, you should aim for more precise collocations and ensure that your descriptive language accurately reflects the data trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the response. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand, and your control of grammar is generally good. There are occasional errors, such as 'the amateur category faced a decline and stayed at 20', which could be phrased more precisely. Punctuation is generally accurate, and your errors do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex sentence structures and ensuring that your verb tenses remain consistent when describing past data.
