Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph provides data about the number of participants for five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia, for the period of twenty years: 2000 to 2020.

Overall, three activities showed an upward trend, while the table tennis category stabilized, and the amateur dramatics class witnessed a downward trend throughout the period of two decades.

The number of film club participants declined slightly from 64 in 2000 to around 60 in 2005, where it remained in 2010. Similarly, martial arts participation fell from 37 to 31 before recovering to 39 in 2010. Amateur dramatics participation increased slightly from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2005, then dropped to 20 in 2015. Meanwhile, table tennis participation rose from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2010 and remained unchanged in 2015. Film club followed the upward trajectory from 2015 to 2020 and climbed to 65 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selects key features to illustrate the data. You have effectively identified the upward, downward, and stabilizing trends. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, you mention the film club declined from 64 in 2000 to 60 in 2005, but the graph shows a more significant drop. Additionally, you state that musical performance had no participants in 2000 or 2005, which is correct, but your description of the later years lacks precision regarding the specific figures. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are transcribed accurately and that comparisons between categories are more explicit throughout the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'Meanwhile', and 'Finally' to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. To improve, ensure that the transition between the second and third body paragraphs is smoother, as the shift from specific years to a summary of the final period feels slightly abrupt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases such as 'upward trajectory', 'stabilized', and 'witnessed a downward trend' are used effectively. There is some repetition of the word 'participation' and 'participants'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied synonyms or paraphrasing techniques to describe the data, such as 'attendance figures', 'the number of individuals involved', or 'the popularity of the activity'. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy communication. You demonstrate good control over tense usage, particularly when describing past trends. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede meaning. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions (e.g., 'it was observed that...') or more sophisticated subordinate clauses to describe the relationships between the different activities more fluidly.
