Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph provides data about the number of participants for five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia, for the period of twenty years: 2000 to 2020.
Overall, three activities showed an upward trend, while the table tennis category stabilized, and the amateur dramatics class witnessed a downward trend throughout the period of two decades.
The number of film club participants declined slightly from 64 in 2000 to around 60 in 2005, where it remained in 2010. Similarly, martial arts participation fell from 37 to 31 before recovering to 39 in 2010. Amateur dramatics participation increased slightly from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2005, then dropped to 20 in 2015. Meanwhile, table tennis participation rose from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2010 and remained unchanged in 2015. Finally, there were no participants in musical performances in 2000 or 2005, but the figure rose sharply to 12 in 2010.
In 2015, musical performances surpassed table tennis, rising to approximately 17 participants. Meanwhile, martial arts overtook amateur dramatics, reaching around 36 participants before increasing further to 52 by the end of the period. The film club also followed an upward trend, rising from 2015 to 2020 and reaching 65 participants in the latter year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all five activities and made relevant comparisons, such as noting when musical performances surpassed table tennis. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; you stated that three activities showed an upward trend and amateur dramatics declined, but the data shows more complexity (e.g., film club fluctuates). Additionally, the grouping of data in the body paragraphs is a bit fragmented, making it difficult to follow the progression of all five lines simultaneously. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview captures the most significant 'big picture' trends more precisely and group data more logically.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'similarly', 'meanwhile', and 'finally' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different time periods and categories. However, the progression between the second and third body paragraphs could be smoother. At times, the transition between specific data points feels a bit mechanical. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the logical flow is maintained throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'witnessed a downward trend', 'remained unchanged', and 'surpassed' are used appropriately. There is some attempt to use less common vocabulary, though it is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more varied ways to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'experienced a marginal increase'. The vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the context of an academic report well, with no significant errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over tense—specifically the past simple for historical data—is consistent. There are no major grammatical errors that cause confusion. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as using more relative clauses or passive voice constructions to describe the data (e.g., 'It can be observed that...'). Your punctuation is accurate, and the overall grammatical control is solid.
