Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph provides data about the number of participants for five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, three activities showed an upward trend, while the table tennis category stabilized, and the amateur dramatics class witnessed a downward trend throughout the period of two decades.
Firstly, Film Club individuals declined from 64 in 2000 to 61 in 2005 and then moved to 60 in 2010. Participants of martial arts dropped from 38 in 2000 to 31 in 2005, then, with a slight increase, stayed at 38 in 2010. The participation of amateurs jumped from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2010 before falling to 20 in 2010. The number of table tennis participants rose to 20 in 2005 as compared to 18 in 2000. From 2005 to 2010, the table tennis remained stable and stayed at 20 in 2010. There was no participation in the musical category from 2000 to 2005, but in 2010 it showed significant growth with 12 participants.
In 2015, the musical category surpassed the amateur class and stayed at 17, while table tennis participants surpassed the martial arts category and climbed to 36. Film club participation slightly increased and moved to 63, then reached 65 in 2020. Martial arts and musical performance followed an upward trend, reaching 62 and 19 participants, respectively. Conversely, the armateur category faced a downward trend and dropped to 7 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features and trends of the graph. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the graph. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting. For example, you stated that the amateur dramatics class jumped to 29 in 2010 before falling to 20, but the graph shows a different trajectory. Additionally, you mentioned 'no participation in the musical category from 2000 to 2005', which is a good observation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points cited are precisely aligned with the visual information provided, as accuracy is paramount in Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In 2015', and 'Conversely' to guide the reader through the data. The paragraphing is appropriate, separating the initial period from the later years. However, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. To improve, focus on varying your linking phrases and ensuring that the progression of ideas flows more naturally between the specific data points you are comparing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'upward trend', 'stabilized', 'witnessed a downward trend', and 'surpassed'. These are appropriate for an academic report. There are a few minor errors, such as 'armateur' (spelling) and 'Film Club individuals' (slightly unnatural collocation). While the range is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated synonyms for 'increased' or 'decreased'—such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained constant'—would enhance the lexical precision of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the table tennis remained stable' (should be 'table tennis participation' or just 'table tennis') and 'the armateur category' (spelling). Your control of punctuation is generally sound. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as relative clauses or participle phrases, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you have already demonstrated.
