Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph provides data about the number of participants for five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, three activities showed an upward trend, while the table tennis category stabilized, and the amateur dramatics class witnessed a downward trend throughout the period of two decades.

Firstly, Film Club individuals declined from 64 in 2000 to 61 in 2005 and then moved to 60 in 2010. Participants of martial arts dropped from 38 in 2000 to 31 in 2005, then, with a slight increase, stayed at 38 in 2010. The participation of amateurs jumped from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2010, then fell to 20 in 2010. The number of table tennis participants rose to 20 in 2005 as compared to 18 in 2000. From 2005 to 2010, the table tennis remained constant and stayed at 20 in 2010. Film club participation slightly increased and moved to 63, then reached 65 in 2020. Martial arts and musical performance followed an upward trend, reaching 62 and 19 participants, respectively. Conversely, the armateur category faced a downward trend and dropped to 7 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends. You successfully identified the upward and downward movements of the various activities. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, you mention the amateur dramatics class jumped from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2010, then fell to 20 in 2010, which is confusing and inconsistent with the graph. Additionally, the description of the musical category is slightly inaccurate regarding the timeline. To improve, ensure that the figures cited precisely match the graph and avoid contradictory statements. The main features are highlighted, but the precision of the data reporting needs to be more rigorous to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally clear, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In 2015', and 'Conversely' to link your points. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing within the body paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the jump between years in the third paragraph makes the narrative feel slightly disjointed. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that the logical progression is consistent throughout will help in achieving a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upward trend', 'stabilized', 'witnessed', and 'surpassed'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'amateurs' to refer to the 'amateur dramatics' class and 'armateur' (a spelling error). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure that you use the correct terminology for the categories provided in the graph.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the table tennis remained constant' (should be 'table tennis participation') and 'the amateur category faced a downward trend'. Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors present do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring greater accuracy in subject-verb agreement and article usage. Overall, your control of grammar is solid but would benefit from more refined sentence construction.
