Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph provides data about the number of participants for five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, three activities showed an upward trend, while the table tennis category stabilized, and the amateur dramatics class witnessed a downward trend throughout the period of two decades.
Firstly, Film Club individuals declined from 64 in 2000 to 61 in 2005 and then moved to 60 in 2010. Participants of martial arts dropped from 38 in 2000 to 31 in 2005, then, with a slight increase, stayed at 38 in 2010. The participation of amateurs jumped from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2005, then fell to 20 in 2010. The number of table tennis participants rose to 20 in 2005 as compared to 18 in 2000. From 2005 to 2010, the table tennis remained constant and stayed at 20 in 2010. There was no participation in the musical category from 2000 to 2005, but in 2010 it showed significant growth with 12 participants.
In 2015, the musical category surpassed the amateur class and stayed at 17, while table tennis participants surpassed the martial arts category and climbed to 36. Film club participation slightly increased and moved to 63, then reached 65 in 2020. Martial arts and musical performance followed an upward trend, reaching 62 and 19 participants, respectively. Conversely, the armateur category faced a downward trend and dropped to 7 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the trends. You successfully identified the main features, such as the upward trends for most activities and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the reporting of data is somewhat mechanical, listing figures year-by-year rather than synthesizing the information into more meaningful trends. To reach a higher band, focus on grouping data points that share similar patterns rather than listing every individual change. The overview is present but could be more analytical by highlighting the most significant shifts or the final standing of the activities at the end of the period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the time periods. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Conversely', and 'while' are used to link ideas. However, the progression within the body paragraphs feels slightly repetitive due to the heavy reliance on listing numbers. Improving the flow between sentences by using more varied referencing (e.g., 'this figure', 'the former', 'the latter') would enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upward trend', 'stabilized', 'surpassed', and 'significant growth'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'Film Club individuals' (should be 'participation in the Film Club') and 'amateurs' (referring to the activity name). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Incorporating more varied reporting verbs and nouns related to data trends would strengthen this section.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and errors are infrequent. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the table tennis remained constant' (should be 'table tennis participation remained constant') and 'the armateur category' (spelling error). You have a good grasp of tense usage, correctly shifting between past and present to describe the data. To improve, try to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or participial phrases to combine related pieces of information more fluidly.
