Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph provides data on the number of individuals participating in six different activities at the social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 to 2020.
The Film club has had a significantly higher number of participants at the beginning of the period and has managed to consistently remain above of all other activities throughout the two decades. The next most popular activity at the center was martial arts although there is significant difference of approximately 30 participants between film club and martial arts. Like the film club it also remained relatively stable. Amateur dramatics started with 25 participants but had only 5 in 2020, representing a significant decline. Table tennis had only 15 participants which increased significantly well after 2010 and by 2020 reached a total of 50 players. Musical performance, unlike the other activities attracted participants only in the year 2005 and improved to include 20 participants by the end of two decades.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all six activities. You successfully identified the most popular activity (Film club) and noted the significant decline in Amateur dramatics. However, the overview is missing. A Band 7+ response requires a clear summary of the main trends or differences at the beginning or end of the report. Additionally, the data for 'Musical performance' is misinterpreted; the graph shows it starting in 2005, but your claim that it 'improved to include 20 participants' is slightly vague regarding the timeline. Including a clear overview would significantly improve your score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with each activity discussed in a clear sequence. Paragraphing is present, though the second paragraph is quite dense and could benefit from being split to separate the stable trends from the fluctuating ones. You use some cohesive devices like 'The next most popular activity' and 'unlike the other activities', which help the flow. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that your linking words are used more naturally and that the progression of ideas feels more cohesive throughout the entire text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significantly higher', 'consistently remain', and 'significant decline'. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'above of all other activities' (should be 'above all other activities'). While you attempt to use descriptive language, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure that prepositions are used accurately with your chosen verbs and adjectives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'between 2000 to 2020' (should be 'between 2000 and 2020' or 'from 2000 to 2020') and 'at the beginning of the period and has managed' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is generally clear, but some sentences are slightly clunky. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the errors present do not impede communication. Focusing on consistent verb tenses and correct preposition usage will help elevate your score.
