Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the film club's popularity and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the overview is somewhat weak and lacks clarity. While you identify some trends, the description of the data is occasionally inaccurate or confusing, such as stating that the number of locals in table tennis 'sharply increased' without providing specific data points to support this. To improve, ensure that your overview highlights the most significant trends clearly and that all data points mentioned are accurate and directly supported by the graph provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the transition 'nevertheless' is used incorrectly in the context of comparing data points, and the use of 'And' and 'Moreoever' at the start of sentences is repetitive and lacks sophistication. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly when moving between different activities. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure they are used in the correct context to create a smoother flow between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'number of citizens' and 'locals' repeatedly. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'movement' to describe an activity and 'considerably good' to describe a trend. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more specific academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'declined', or 'remained stable', and ensure these are used with correct collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'number of participants... were fluctuated'), incorrect tense usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'much of locals were participate'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with sentence boundaries. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your verb tenses are consistent when describing past data. Proofreading for small errors like missing articles or incorrect prepositions will also help improve your accuracy.
