Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph below illustrates the number of people participated in different activities at particular social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it is evident that the number of participants in film club remained high throughout the time period. However, the number of participants in musical performances and dramatics increased over time.

In 2000, almost 65 people participated on film club considerably higher than the figures for other categories. It then decreased slightly to 60 by 2010 before rising again to same level as in beginning. Similarly, the number of participants in martial arts stood at 35 at both the beginning and end, despite fluctuating slightly in between. Moreover, only 15 people participated in table tennis in 2000. The figure then increased gradually reaching 20 in 2010 and continue to do so until the end, reached 55 by 2020, becoming the second highest category at the end.

Regarding dramatics, the figure stood at 25 in 2000, it then declined steadily reaching 20 in 2010, after which it further decreased to 5 by the end of the period. Finally, none participated in musical performances until 2005, after which number started rising gradually reaching 18 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all five categories. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the film club remaining high and the significant growth in table tennis. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; you mentioned that musical performances and dramatics increased, but the graph shows that dramatics actually declined significantly over the period. To improve, ensure that your summary of trends is strictly supported by the data provided. The inclusion of specific data points (e.g., 65, 35, 15) helps to support the main features effectively, meeting the requirements for a clear overview and detailed reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs grouped by category. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Similarly', 'Moreover', and 'Finally' to link ideas. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, separating the overview from the detailed analysis. To reach a higher band, focus on varying your cohesive devices further and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is always smooth and natural, rather than relying on a standard list of linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuating', 'declined steadily', and 'gradually reaching'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'participated on film club' (should be 'in') and 'at beginning' (missing article). While you successfully use some less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations for describing trends, such as 'experienced a marginal decline' or 'showed a consistent upward trajectory', and ensure articles are used correctly with nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('at particular social centre', 'at beginning') and tense inconsistencies ('continue to do so', 'reached 55'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'Regarding dramatics, the figure stood at 25 in 2000, it then declined steadily', which is a comma splice. To improve, focus on correcting basic subject-verb agreement and article usage. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences by using subordinating conjunctions more accurately will help raise your score.
