Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates changes in the number of people participating in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, over a 20-year period from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club consistently attracted the largest number of participants, while table tennis experienced the most remarkable growth. By contrast, participation in amateur dramatics declined substantially. Martial arts remained relatively stable, whereas musical performances gained popularity after 2005.

In 2000, the film club had around 64 participants, considerably more than any other activity. Its membership then declined gradually, reaching approximately 59 in 2010, before recovering to about 65 by 2020. Martial arts, by comparison, began at roughly 36 participants. Although its figure fluctuated, it remained within the range of about 32 to 38 participants throughout the period.

The most striking change was seen in table tennis. Starting at only 15 participants in 2000, its membership rose to 20 in 2005 and remained at this level in 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selects key features for comparison. You have accurately identified the film club as the most popular and highlighted the significant growth in table tennis. However, the response is incomplete as it fails to describe the data for amateur dramatics and musical performances, which were mentioned in the overview but not detailed in the body paragraphs. To achieve a higher band, ensure that all categories mentioned in the overview are supported by specific data points in the body paragraphs. The analysis is accurate, but the omission of half the data categories limits the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'By contrast', 'In 2000', and 'Although its figure fluctuated', which help guide the reader through the information. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a distinct separation between the overview and the specific data analysis. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is seamless and that each paragraph is fully developed before moving to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report, such as 'consistently attracted', 'substantial', 'fluctuated', and 'remarkable growth'. The language is precise and conveys the trends effectively. There are no spelling errors, and the word choice is generally natural and accurate. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied ways to describe trends, such as 'witnessed a steady climb' or 'underwent a period of stagnation'. Overall, your lexical control is strong and supports clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Although its figure fluctuated, it remained within the range of about 32 to 38 participants'. The punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede understanding. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing good control over tense usage (past simple for the historical data). To improve further, you could experiment with more varied complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or participle clauses, to enhance the academic tone.
