Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given line chart compares the information about five different activities in a social centre located in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club took the highest number of participants throughout the period, while table tennis experienced the most significant growth in comparison with other four sections. In contrast, amateur dramatics decreased very sharply, and in 2015 it became the least popular activity by the end of the period.

In 2000, around 64 people attended the film club, and remained stable until a slight decrease to approximately 60 in 2010. But it quickly recovered to about 64 in 2015 and marginally rose to 66 at the end. The number of participants in martial arts changed slightly over the year, varying between 31 and 36 people before finishing at about 33 in 2020.

Table tennis, however, showed good growth, starting at 16 participants in 2000, the line rose slightly to over 19 in 2010 before growing dramatically to about 51 by 2020. Meanwhile, amateur dramatics fell significantly starting from 25 participants to just 3 over the same period. In contrast, Musical performances, which had 0 participants until 2005, rose gradually until finishing at about 16 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected key data points to support your descriptions. The comparison between activities is well-handled, particularly the contrast between the growth of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics. The data is accurate and the report is well-structured, covering all categories shown in the graph. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant overall patterns even more explicitly, perhaps by grouping the activities by their performance trends (e.g., those that grew versus those that declined).

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a concise overview, and two body paragraphs that group the information effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'however' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the comparisons. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the general trends from the specific data points. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow. The use of referencing is generally clear, contributing to the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, such as 'experienced the most significant growth', 'decreased very sharply', and 'marginally rose'. There is a good awareness of collocation and style appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, incorporating a few more sophisticated or varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' (e.g., 'surged', 'plummeted', 'witnessed a steady climb') would further enhance the lexical range and demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Musical performances, which had 0 participants until 2005, rose gradually...'. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'in comparison with other four sections' (should be 'the other four') and 'over the year' (should be 'over the years'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The overall grammatical accuracy is strong.
