Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response provides a basic summary of the graph, but it lacks the analytical depth required for a higher band. While you identify some trends, such as the growth in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics, the description of the data is often vague. For example, you mention 'same distance' and 'high change' without referencing specific data points or years to support these claims. To improve, you must include specific figures from the graph to illustrate your points and ensure that all trends are clearly linked to the provided timeframes. The overview is present but lacks clarity regarding the overall patterns.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences are often missing or awkward, such as 'By years to years' and 'the conclusion of this graph that'. The use of referencing is also weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of ideas. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'in contrast', 'subsequently') to connect your sentences and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'go up', 'rise up', and 'activities'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'participants of Melbourne' instead of 'participants in Melbourne' and 'highly played member'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuate', 'plateau', or 'significant increase', and ensure that your word forms are accurate in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the graph show'), tense consistency (mixing present and past), and sentence structure (many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation). The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing past data, and practicing the use of complex sentences with appropriate subordinating conjunctions.
