Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustrated line graph provides information on the number of participants in different activities in one social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020. Overall, the film club consistently had the highest number of participants. However, table tennis experienced significant growth while the popularity of amateur dramatics declined drastically.
To begin with, In the year 2000 there were about 67 participants in the film club. Which slightly fell to 60 by the year 2010. After which it rose and remained stable, culminating at 67 participants once again 2020. In addition, Martial arts experienced slight fluctuations in popularity starting off with 45 participants in the year 2000 and experiencing a decline to 36 by 2020. Amateur dramatics, started off with 28 participants in the year 2000, reached a maximum of 30 by the year 2005 and then it sharply declined to 11 participants by the year 2020. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for each activity. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes, such as the growth of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics. The data is accurately reported, and comparisons are made effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that the data selection is consistently balanced; for instance, the final paragraph regarding musical performances is slightly brief compared to the detailed breakdown of the other categories. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear focus on the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'In contrast to this', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with paragraphing; the final sentence 'On the other hand,' is left hanging at the end of the second paragraph, which disrupts the flow. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Improving the integration of these devices and ensuring paragraph breaks are placed logically would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with effective use of terms like 'fluctuations', 'culminating', and 'upward trend'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Which slightly fell' (which is a sentence fragment) and 'drastically rose'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. Incorporating more varied collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would strengthen this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with sentence fragments and punctuation. For example, 'Which slightly fell to 60...' is a fragment, and 'In the year 2000 there were about 67 participants in the film club. Which slightly fell...' should be joined. There are also minor errors in preposition usage and article placement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundary control and subject-verb agreement will improve accuracy.
