Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the upward trends for Table tennis and Musical performance, the decline in Amateur dramatics, and the stability of the Film club and Martial arts. The overview is clear and highlights the main trends effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, the text mentions '0 applicants' for Musical performance in 2005, whereas the graph shows a starting point of 5. Additionally, the description of the Film club and Martial arts as having the 'highest figure' is slightly imprecise given the fluctuations shown. Despite these minor data interpretation issues, the response successfully addresses the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group the activities. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'Looking first at', and 'Turning to' are used to guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of 'Amateur dramatics, while, started with' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'upward trend', 'increased gradually', and 'falling sharply' used correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as using 'applicants' instead of 'participants' when referring to people attending activities. The phrase '20 number of participants' is also slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. The student relies on basic descriptive language rather than more varied or academic collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'before significant increase' (missing an article), 'remain stable' (tense inconsistency with the past period), and 'Amateur dramatics, while, started with' (incorrect placement of 'while'). Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. The student demonstrates a reasonable grasp of sentence construction, but more consistent control over articles and verb tenses is needed to reach a higher band.
