Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all five activities. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the film club's dominance and the significant rise of table tennis. However, the report is overly descriptive, listing data for every single year rather than grouping information to highlight key trends and comparisons. This makes the report feel like a list of data points rather than a summary. To reach a higher band, focus on synthesising the data—for example, grouping activities that showed similar trends or highlighting the most significant changes at the start and end of the period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different time periods. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive, with phrases like 'in 2000', 'in 2005', and 'in 2010' starting almost every paragraph. This creates a mechanical feel. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect ideas between sentences and paragraphs, such as 'subsequently', 'following this', or 'by contrast', to improve the flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, using terms like 'steady increase', 'fell sharply', and 'maintained an increasing and decreasing trend'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'amount of participants' (should be 'number of participants') and 'least participated activity' (should be 'least popular activity'). Additionally, there is a spelling error: 'daramatics'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and ensuring accurate word forms will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'maintained a an increasing' (double article) and inconsistent punctuation around numbers and commas. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'musical performance also saw popularity with members'. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these minor errors indicates that you have not yet achieved the level of control required for a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for small errors like articles and prepositions will significantly enhance the quality of your writing.
