Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the growth in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the reporting is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, stating that film club participation is 'well under 70' is vague, and the description of musical performances as 'far low' is not standard academic terminology. The overview is present but lacks clarity, and some data points are misinterpreted or poorly described. To improve, focus on identifying clear trends (e.g., upward, downward, stable) and using precise data points rather than vague descriptions like 'a tiny up and down'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear transitions. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall' and 'Moreover', they are sometimes applied incorrectly or do not effectively link the ideas. The progression of information is disjointed, particularly in the final paragraph where the description of martial arts feels tacked on. To improve, ensure that each sentence logically follows the previous one and use cohesive devices to create a smoother narrative rather than just listing observations.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often used incorrectly. Phrases like 'rapid amount of volunteers' and 'passage of leisure time' are unnatural and do not accurately convey the intended meaning. There is also a lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptors. The student relies on basic terms like 'huge amount' and 'quantity', which are not precise enough for describing statistical data. To reach a higher band, you should learn collocations specific to data analysis, such as 'experienced a significant increase' or 'remained relatively stable'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('members participate' instead of 'participating'), incorrect preposition usage ('in 2000 to 2020' instead of 'from 2000 to 2020'), and awkward sentence structures. The attempt at complex sentences often results in run-on sentences or confusing syntax, such as 'the interest of players in the film club its well under 70'. A greater focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for tense consistency is required to improve accuracy.
