Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a general overview and identifies some key trends, such as the film club's dominance and the rise in table tennis. However, the report lacks precision in data reporting. For instance, stating 'there was 20 participants in both amateur dramatics and table tennis in 2010' is inaccurate based on the graph, and the description of the 'nil amount' for musical performances is slightly confusing. The summary of trends is somewhat disjointed, and the final paragraph is redundant as it repeats information already mentioned. To improve, ensure that data points are cited accurately and that the overview clearly contrasts the most significant trends without repeating details.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by the structure. The final paragraph is unnecessary and adds little value, suggesting a lack of planning. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'Whereas', 'After this'), they are sometimes used mechanically or incorrectly. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the transition between the overview and the specific data points. To reach a higher band, focus on grouping related information more logically—perhaps by category or trend—and ensure that each paragraph serves a distinct purpose in the overall report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'nil amount of people participants' and 'there was declined in amateur dramatics'. The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a sharp decline', and ensure that nouns and verbs are used in grammatically correct collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('film club participants were highest than', 'there was 20 participants') and incorrect preposition usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is often repetitive. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of 'there is/are' constructions. Increasing the variety of sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help move the score into the 6.0+ range.
