Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all the activities mentioned in the graph and attempts to identify main trends. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the data. While the student identifies the highest and lowest points, the description of the trends is often disjointed and lacks precision in reporting the data points. For instance, stating 'around 55' or 'around 35' is acceptable, but the lack of clear comparison between the categories makes it difficult for the reader to grasp the overall picture. The response would benefit from a more structured approach to grouping the data, such as comparing the rising trends versus the declining ones.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression between them is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'In other hand' (instead of 'On the other hand') and 'whereas' used incorrectly at the start of a sentence. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationship between the different activities. While there is an attempt to use transition words, they are often misused, which disrupts the flow of the information. Improved use of linking phrases and better paragraph structure would significantly enhance the clarity of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'number', 'activity', and 'interest', which restricts the ability to describe the data with precision. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'marginally desire' and 'candidate interest was rose'. These errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding. To reach a higher band, the student needs to incorporate more varied vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'peaked', or 'experienced a decline', and improve their control over word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that affect readability. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'candidate interest was rose'), missing articles (e.g., 'throughout year 2000'), and incorrect sentence structures. The student relies primarily on simple sentences, and attempts at more complex structures often result in errors. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization. While the meaning is generally discernible, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors would be beneficial.
