Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph shows the changes in the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, for the period between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, participants in every activity increased at the end of the period as compared to the beginning, but one exception was amateur dramatics, which declined over time and moved to the least participation.

Firstly, the film club participants declined from 64 in 2000 to 62 in 2005 and stood at 60 in 2010. After 2010, participation increased in the film club and jumped to 65 in 2015 and reached its highest point in 2020 with 66 contestants. Additionally, the martial arts members fell from 36 in 2000 to 31 in 2005. Moreover, after 2005, the participants rose from 31 to 38 in 2010 as compared to 35 in 2015, but at the end of the period, it stayed at the same point as at the beginning of the period.

Furthermore, the amateur dramatics category witnessed a minor increment from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2005. After 2005, it faced a sharp decline and fell from 29 to 20 in 2010. After 2005, it moved in a downward direction and reached only 8 participants at the end of the period. In table tennis, the contestant jumped from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2005 and remained unchanged in 2010 to stay at 20, but after 2010 it showed significant growth. After 2015 it surpassed the martial arts category and climbed to 52 at the end of the period. Finally, the musical performance category showed no participants from 200 to 2005, but after 2005, contestants reached from zero to 18 at the end of the period by surpassing the amateur category after 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the trends. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the overall growth in most activities and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you stated that martial arts ended at the same point as the beginning (36), but the graph shows it ending at 35. Additionally, the description of musical performance starting from '200 to 2005' is a clear typo that affects accuracy. While the main trends are captured, more precise data handling and careful proofreading of figures would elevate the response to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the trends more effectively rather than listing each activity in isolation. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal cohesion within the paragraph about martial arts is slightly disjointed due to the way the data points are sequenced.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'witnessed a minor increment', 'sharp decline', and 'surpassed'. There is an attempt to use less common items, though some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'contestants' when referring to participants in a social centre activity. The repetition of 'participants' and 'category' could be mitigated by using synonyms like 'attendees', 'members', or 'individuals'. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate for the task, and errors in word choice do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'the contestant jumped' (should be plural) and 'reached from zero to 18' (awkward phrasing). The sentence 'the martial arts members fell from 36 in 2000 to 31 in 2005' is accurate, but some later sentences are slightly clunky. While there are errors in tense consistency and article usage, they rarely impede meaning. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the accuracy of your complex sentence constructions.
