Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph shows the changes in the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, for the period between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, participants in every activity increased at the end of the period as compared to the beginning, but one exception was amateur dramatics, which declined over time and moved to the least participation.

Firstly, the film club participants declined from 64 in 2000 to 62 in 2005 and stood at 60 in 2010. After 2010, participation increased in the film club and jumped to 65 in 2015 and reached its highest point in 2020 with 66 contestants. Additionally, the martial arts members fell from 36 in 2000 to 31 in 2005. Moreover, after 2005, the participants rose from 31 to 38 in 2010 as compared to 35 in 2015, but at the end of the period, it stayed at the same point as at the beginning of the period.

Furthermore, the amateur dramatics category witnessed a minor increment from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2005. After 2005, it faced a sharp decline and fell from 29 to 20 in 2010. After 2005, it moved in a downward direction and reached only 8 participants at the end of the period. In table tennis, the contestant jumped from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2005 and remained unchanged in 2010 to stay at 20, but after 2010 it showed significant growth. After 2015 it surpassed the martial arts category and climbed to 52 at the end of the period. Finally, the musical performance category showed no participants from 2000 to 2005, but after 2005, contestants reached from zero to 18 at the end of the period by surpassing the amateur category after 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the decline in amateur dramatics and the growth in table tennis. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting of the data. For example, you stated that martial arts participants 'stayed at the same point as at the beginning' (36 in 2000, 36 in 2020), but the graph shows a slight variation. Additionally, your summary of the film club's trend is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited with absolute precision and that the overview highlights the most significant shifts rather than just listing every change.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on specific categories. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the internal structure of the paragraphs could be improved by grouping trends more effectively rather than listing year-by-year changes. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow would be enhanced by using more varied linking phrases to connect the comparisons between different activities more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'witnessed a minor increment', 'sharp decline', and 'surpassed'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as using 'contestants' to describe participants in a social centre, which is slightly unnatural in this context. You also repeat certain phrases like 'at the end of the period' frequently. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure that your vocabulary choices are consistently appropriate for a formal report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the contestant jumped' (should be plural 'contestants') and 'reached from zero to 18' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Your control of tense is generally good, but ensure that subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the report. Focusing on proofreading for small errors like pluralization will help improve your accuracy.
