Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph shows the changes in the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, for the period between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, participants in every activity increased at the end of the period as compared to the beginning, but one exception was amateur dramatics, which declined over time and moved to the least participation.

Firstly, the film club participants declined from 64 in 2000 to 62 in 2005 and stood at 60 in 2010. After 2010, participation increased in the film club and jumped to 65 in 2015 and reached its highest point in 2020 with 66 contestants. Additionally, the martial arts members fell from 36 in 2000 to 31 in 2005. Moreover, after 2005, the participants rose from 31 to 38 in 2010 as compared to 35 in 2015, but at the end of the period, it stayed at the same point as at the beginning of the period.

Furthermore, the amateur dramatics category witnessed a minor increment from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2005. However, participation subsequently decreased, reaching 20 in 2010 and falling to only 8 participants in 2020. Meanwhile, table tennis participation rose from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2005 and remained unchanged in 2010. It then increased considerably, reaching 52 participants in 2020 and surpassing martial arts after 2015. Finally, the musical performance category showed no participants from 2000 to 2005, but participation subsequently increased steadily, reaching 19 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response effectively identifies the main trends and provides a clear overview. You have selected key data points to support your descriptions, such as the peak for the film club and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, there are some inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, you stated martial arts ended at the same point as the beginning (36), but the graph shows it ending at 35. Additionally, the overview mentions that 'every activity increased' at the end, which is inaccurate as martial arts remained stable or slightly lower, and amateur dramatics declined significantly. More careful checking of the data points against your summary statements is required to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs grouped by activity. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Meanwhile' are used to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is less mechanical; some of the linking words feel slightly repetitive. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'witnessed a minor increment', 'remained unchanged', and 'increased steadily'. There is some attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as referring to participants as 'contestants' in a social centre context. Spelling is accurate throughout. To achieve a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations related to data reporting, such as 'fluctuated' or 'experienced a downward trend' rather than repeating 'increased' or 'declined'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'After 2010, participation increased in the film club and jumped to 65 in 2015'. There are occasional grammatical slips, such as 'moved to the least participation' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'as compared to 35 in 2015' (which is a slightly confusing comparison). However, these errors do not impede communication. The control of punctuation and sentence boundaries is generally good, and the majority of your sentences are error-free.
