Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph shows the changes in the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, for the period between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, participants in every activity increased at the end of the period as compared to the beginning, but one exception was amateur dramatics, which declined over time and became the activity with the lowest participation.
Firstly, the film club participants declined from 64 in 2000 to 62 in 2005 and stood at 60 in 2010. After 2010, participation increased in the film club and jumped to 65 in 2015 and reached its highest point in 2020 with 66 contestants. Additionally, the martial arts members fell from 36 in 2000 to 31 in 2005. Moreover, after 2005, the participants rose from 31 to 38 in 2010 as compared to 35 in 2015, but at the end of the period, it stayed at the same point as at the beginning of the period.
Furthermore, the amateur dramatics category witnessed a minor increase from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2005. However, participation subsequently decreased, reaching 20 in 2010 and falling to only 8 participants in 2020. Meanwhile, table tennis participation rose from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2005 and remained unchanged in 2010. It then increased considerably, reaching 52 participants in 2020 and surpassing martial arts after 2015. Finally, the musical performance category showed no participants from 2000 to 2005, but participation subsequently increased steadily, reaching 19 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as noting that table tennis surpassed martial arts. However, there is a factual error in your summary: you stated that 'participants in every activity increased at the end of the period', but the data shows martial arts ended at the same level as the start (36), and amateur dramatics decreased significantly. Additionally, the description of martial arts is slightly confusing, as you mention it stayed at the same point, but the data shows it fluctuated. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview accurately reflects the overall trajectory of all categories without over-generalizing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to specific categories. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'Meanwhile' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used effectively to group related information. The progression of ideas is clear, and the relationship between the different activities is well-managed. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is always smooth; occasionally, the listing of figures feels slightly mechanical, but overall, the structure supports the information well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, using terms like 'declined', 'jumped', 'witnessed a minor increase', and 'remained unchanged'. This is adequate for the task. However, you rely on some repetitive phrasing and basic descriptors. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied verbs to describe movement, such as 'plummeted', 'fluctuated', or 'experienced a steady climb'. You also used the word 'contestants' to refer to participants, which is slightly inaccurate in the context of a social centre; 'members' or 'attendees' would be more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your control of grammar is generally good. Most sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is accurate. There are minor issues with phrasing, such as 'stayed at the same point as at the beginning of the period', which is a bit wordy. You also have a slight error in 'as compared to 35 in 2015', where the comparison structure is a little awkward. Overall, your grammar is reliable and does not impede communication, but incorporating a wider variety of complex structures, such as participle clauses or relative clauses, would enhance your score.
