Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph shows the changes in the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, for the period between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, participation in most activities increased over the period, while amateur dramatics experienced a substantial decline and became the least popular activity.
Firstly, the film club participants declined from 64 in 2000 to 62 in 2005 and stood at 60 in 2010. After 2010, participation increased in the film club and jumped to 65 in 2015 and reached its highest point in 2020 with 66 contestants. Additionally, the martial arts members fell from 36 in 2000 to 31 in 2005. Moreover, after 2005, the participants rose from 31 to 38 in 2010 as compared to 35 in 2015, but at the end of the period, it stayed at the same point as at the beginning of the period.
Furthermore, the amateur dramatics category witnessed a minor increase from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2005. However, participation subsequently decreased, reaching 20 in 2010 and falling to only 8 participants in 2020. Meanwhile, table tennis participation rose from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2005 and remained unchanged in 2010. It then increased considerably, reaching 52 participants in 2020 and surpassing martial arts after 2015. Finally, the musical performance category showed no participants from 2000 to 2005, but participation subsequently increased steadily, reaching 19 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as noting that table tennis surpassed martial arts. However, the report is slightly mechanical in its approach, listing data points for each category sequentially. To reach a higher band, focus on grouping the data more effectively by trends (e.g., those that increased vs. those that fluctuated or declined) rather than describing each category in isolation. This would allow for a more analytical summary rather than a simple list of figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Meanwhile' to link ideas. The progression of information is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly disconnected because they focus too heavily on individual data points rather than the overall narrative of the graph. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'substantial decline', 'increased considerably', and 'remained unchanged'. The use of 'contestants' for film club members is slightly inaccurate in this context, as 'participants' or 'attendees' would be more natural. You demonstrate a good awareness of style, though the vocabulary is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of verbs to describe movement, such as 'plummeted', 'surged', or 'stabilized'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are very few errors, and those present do not impede communication. For instance, 'it stayed at the same point as at the beginning' is grammatically correct but slightly wordy. You have good control over punctuation and tense usage. To improve, aim for more sophisticated complex structures, such as using participle clauses (e.g., 'Declining from 64 in 2000, the film club...') to improve the flow and variety of your writing.
