Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph shows the changes in the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, for the period between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, participation in most activities increased over the period, while amateur dramatics experienced a substantial decline and became the least popular activity.
Firstly, the film club participants declined from 64 in 2000 to 62 in 2005 and stood at 60 in 2010. After 2010, participation increased in the film club and jumped to 65 in 2015 and reached its highest point in 2020 with 66 contestants. Additionally, the martial arts members fell from 36 in 2000 to 31 in 2005. Moreover, after 2005, the participants rose from 31 to 38 in 2010 as compared to 35 in 2015, but at the end of the period, it stayed at the same point as at the beginning of the period.
Furthermore, the amateur dramatics category witnessed a minor increase from 27 in 2000 to 29 in 2005. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as noting that table tennis surpassed martial arts. However, the report is slightly mechanical in its approach, listing data points chronologically for each category rather than grouping them by significant trends or shared patterns. To reach a higher band, focus on synthesizing the information more effectively—for example, grouping activities that showed growth versus those that declined. The data is accurate, and the key features are well-highlighted, meeting the requirements for a solid response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'Meanwhile' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different activities. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the transitions feel slightly formulaic. To improve, try to vary the way you link sentences and ensure that the progression between ideas feels more natural rather than just moving from one category to the next in a list-like fashion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'substantial decline', 'remained unchanged', and 'increased considerably' are used effectively. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices could be more precise. For instance, referring to participants as 'contestants' in the film club is slightly inaccurate, as 'members' or 'attendees' would be more appropriate for a social centre activity. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your control of grammar is generally good. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are minor issues with preposition usage and word order, such as 'stayed at the same point as at the beginning of the period', which is slightly wordy. You demonstrate a good command of tense, appropriately using the past tense to describe the historical data. To achieve a higher score, incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as relative clauses or participle phrases, to improve the sophistication of your writing.
