Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph compares the number of people who participated in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, while table tennis experienced the most significant growth. In comparison, participation in amateur dramatics declined rapidly. Musical performances also increased, whereas martial arts remained slightly stable.
In 2000, around 65 people attended the film club, making it the most popular activity. This figure fell to about 60 in 2010, before rising again to nearly 66 by 2020. Participation in martial arts started at around 35 people and dropped to 32 in 2005. It then increased to 38 in 2010 before ending at about 36 in 2020.
Amateur dramatics had about 26 participants in 2000, rising slowly to 28 in 2005. However, the number then fell slowly, reaching 20 in 2010, 14 in 2015 and only around 6 by 2020. Table tennis showed the opposite pattern. Starting at just 16 participants in 2000, it reached 20 in 2005 and remained at this level in 2010. After that, participation rose sharply to 36 in 2015 and approximately 54 in 2020.
Finally, musical performances had almost no participants in 2000 and 2005. However, the number increased to about 12 in 2010 and continued increasing to 16 in 2015 and 18 in 2020. By the end, it had become more popular than amateur dramatics

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends and selected key features to illustrate the changes over the 20-year period. The comparison between activities is well-handled, particularly the contrast between the decline in amateur dramatics and the sharp rise in table tennis. The data is accurately reported, and the inclusion of specific figures supports your observations well. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends even more sharply, perhaps by grouping the activities by their overall trajectory (e.g., those that grew versus those that declined) to provide a more cohesive summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the data, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In comparison,' 'However,' and 'Finally,' to link sentences and paragraphs. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is smooth throughout the text. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a logical separation between the overview and the detailed body paragraphs. No significant issues were noted in terms of cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the trends accurately, including terms like 'remained the most popular,' 'experienced the most significant growth,' and 'rose sharply.' The vocabulary is appropriate for an academic report and is used with good control. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for 'increased' or 'decreased' to avoid repetition, such as 'fluctuated,' 'surged,' or 'plummeted,' where appropriate, to demonstrate a wider lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your writing. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over tense usage (past simple for historical data) is consistent and accurate. To achieve a higher band, you could experiment with more varied complex sentence structures, such as using participle clauses or more advanced subordinating conjunctions to further enhance the sophistication of your writing.
