Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates number of participants in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it is evident that film clubs have remained a popular activity for over twenty years, in contrast, participants in amateur dramatics have declined over time.

Looking at the activities that showed relatively stable and declining participation, film clubs have remained consistently popular throughout the period with number of participants remaining between 60 and 70, whereas, the participants of martial arts have remained stable, showing a little fluctuation between 30 and 40. In contrast, the popularity of amateur dramatics took a sudden fall after 2005, which showed a drastic decline in the number of participants from 30 to 5.

Turning to the remaining activities, with time people started to take interest in table tennis, as the number of participants dramatically increased from 15 in 2000 to 55 in 2020. In addition, Musical performance which once had zero participants till 2005, showed a slight increase in its participants as there were 20 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all five activities and made relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the decline in amateur dramatics with the growth in table tennis. The data points are generally accurate, and the information is well-selected. To reach a higher band, ensure you consistently include units of measurement (e.g., 'participants') when referring to figures, and perhaps group the data more analytically by trend (e.g., grouping the 'growing' activities together) to further enhance the clarity of your reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the activities effectively. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'in contrast,' 'whereas,' and 'in addition' to link your ideas. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that your referencing is precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'the remaining activities' is a good transition, but ensure that the internal structure within paragraphs remains focused on the specific trends being discussed to avoid any potential for confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'consistently popular,' 'drastic decline,' and 'dramatically increased.' This allows for some precision in your reporting. There are a few minor issues, such as missing articles (e.g., 'illustrates number of participants' should be 'illustrates the number of participants'). To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common synonyms for trends, such as 'a marginal fluctuation' or 'a steady upward trajectory,' to demonstrate a more flexible control of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using 'whereas' and 'as' to create subordinate clauses. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. However, there are occasional slips, such as 'Musical performance which once had zero participants till 2005, showed a slight increase,' where the comma placement is slightly awkward. Additionally, ensure consistent use of articles. Overall, your control of grammar is strong enough to communicate your points clearly without any significant impediment to the reader.
