Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants across five different activities such as film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, some activities witnessed significant growth while some faced decline in number of participants and one remained consistently popular. The film club was the most popular activity throughout the entire given period. Whereas, the musical performance was the worst from the beginning but later on it bypassed one activity at the end of time.

Martial arts was the most consistent activity across all others, started at 36 in 2000 and faced minor ups and downs then returned to 36 in 2020. However, film club initiated at 64 in 2000, faced some fluctuation and finally reached its peak of 2020

Furthermore, musical performance had zero performers in 2005, and they gradually gained, going up 12 in 2010 and finally reached 19 in 2020. However, amateur dramatics had 36, gradually reached 38 in 2005 then faced major downfall and arrived 7 in 2020

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all five activities and made relevant comparisons. However, the report is missing data for 'table tennis', which is a significant omission given the task instructions to report on the provided information. Additionally, some data points are slightly inaccurate, such as stating the film club reached its peak in 2020 when the graph shows a decline after 2015. To improve, ensure you include all categories presented in the visual and double-check your data points against the axes to ensure precision.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'Overall' to link ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. For instance, the second body paragraph is quite short compared to the first. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., using 'the former' or 'the latter' instead of repeating activity names) would help the flow of the text and make the progression of ideas more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'witnessed significant growth', 'consistently popular', and 'fluctuation'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'bypassed one activity at the end of time' and 'worst from the beginning'. These phrases sound unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoid informal phrasing. You have a sufficient range to communicate the main features, but more variety in describing trends would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' film club, 'the' musical performance) and preposition errors ('arrived 7' instead of 'arrived at 7'). Some sentences are also slightly fragmented or lack necessary punctuation, such as the final sentence of the second paragraph which lacks a full stop. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles.
