Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, but it lacks a clear overview. While you mention individual trends, you do not synthesize the data to highlight the most significant changes or overall patterns across the period. Some data points are described, but the analysis is somewhat fragmented. To improve, ensure you include an introductory summary statement that captures the overall trends (e.g., which activities grew and which remained stable) rather than just listing the activities. Additionally, ensure all data points are accurate; for example, describing a trend as a 'dramatic surge' requires a clear comparison of the starting and ending figures to justify the description.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression between ideas is sometimes weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'In 2000' or 'this activity'. Some sentences feel disconnected, making the flow of information slightly disjointed. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'In contrast,' 'Subsequently,' 'Furthermore') to connect your observations more fluidly. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping activities by their growth patterns rather than listing them one by one.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. You rely on basic descriptors like 'popular,' 'interesting,' and 'number of participants.' There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'felt interesting activity' and 'report is so interesting.' To reach a higher band, try to use more academic vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' 'experienced a significant increase,' or 'gained popularity.' Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' will also help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'Film club was the popular activity' (missing article), 'there was a 64 participants' (subject-verb agreement), and 'Amateur dramatics was has 27' (incorrect verb tense/structure). These errors are noticeable throughout the text. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that your verb tenses are consistent when describing past data. Proofreading for basic sentence construction will help reduce these frequent slips.
