Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated in 5 different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australian between the year 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the film club had the highest number of participants in film club among the 5 activities over these 20 years. Other than that, there was no participant for musical performances until 2005 which grew afterwards on the later years.
The number of participants remained 60 or above throughout the 20 years time period in case of film club, whereas, martial arts had gone through ups and downs between 30 to 40 people. In 2000, the third popular activity was amateur dramatics with about 25 participants which grew a bit in the year 2005 but, then had a steady fall for the next 15 years.
On the contrary, the number of participants of table tennis grew slightly in 2005 and was stable until 2010. Afterwards, it had a sharp rise for the next 10 years, increasing the number into almost 50 people. Lastly, even though there was no existence of musical performances until 2005, gained popularity eventually in the following years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview. You covered all five activities and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the film club's dominance and the contrasting trends of table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, the report lacks specific data points to support your observations. For instance, you mention a 'sharp rise' for table tennis but do not provide the starting or ending figures. To reach a higher band, ensure you include key data points (e.g., specific years or participant numbers) to illustrate your descriptions more precisely, rather than relying solely on general trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the contrary' and 'Lastly'. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'number of participants'. Improving the variety of cohesive links and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a distinct group of trends would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'participated', 'steady fall', and 'gained popularity'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'no existence of musical performances' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'in case of film club'. To improve, try to use more precise collocations and avoid repeating the same phrases. Incorporating more varied vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated' instead of 'ups and downs', would help demonstrate a more sophisticated lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'in 5 different activities' (should be 'in five different activities'), 'Australian' (should be 'Australia'), and 'grew afterwards on the later years' (should be 'in later years'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage to increase the accuracy of your writing. Most of your sentences are clear, but refining these small errors will improve your overall control.
