Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates information on the numbers of participants for different activities namely film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, musical performances at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 to 2020.

Overall, participants for film club relatively stood at the highest position throughout the period and amateur dramatics stood the opposite. However, martial art showed moderate participants till the end whereas between table tennis and musical performances, table tennis maintained the upward trend of gaining more participants during the last decade.

In 2000, film club started with 65 participants and showed a slight decline till 2010 at above 60 and then achieved the momentum again and increased the number of participants before ending at above 65 in 2020, the highest recorded figure among all. Meanwhile, martial arts started with approximately 36 participants in 2000 and fluctuated between upper 30 to 35 till 2020 which is surely a relatively modest figure as compared with others.

In contrast, amateur dramatics showed a start with approximately 26 participants and slightly decreased to 20 participants in 2010 and was unable to recover the downward fall until 2020 at only 5 participants. However, table tennis started with approximately 16 participants and rose to 20 participants in 2010 just like the previous one but this time it unlikely peaked at approximately 52 participants in 2020. Musical performances started with 0 participants in 2005 which is a exception from the rest of the activities and rose to approximately 16 participants at the end of 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all five activities. You successfully identified the highest and lowest participants and noted the significant rise in table tennis. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main trends. However, some data points are slightly imprecise (e.g., describing 65 as 'above 65' when the graph clearly hits the line). To reach a higher band, ensure that data reporting is as precise as possible and that comparisons between categories are more explicitly linked throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group the activities effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'In contrast', and 'However' are used to guide the reader through the data. While the progression is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows logically from the general overview to specific details. To improve, try to vary the cohesive devices further to avoid repetitive sentence starters.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'upward trend', 'fluctuated', and 'downward fall'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'achieved the momentum again' and 'unlikely peaked', which sound slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication, it lacks the sophistication and precise collocation required for higher bands. Focusing on more academic collocations for describing graphs will help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'namely film club, martial arts...' (missing articles) and 'is a exception' (should be 'an exception'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'participants for film club relatively stood at the highest position'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would improve this score.
