Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the trends for the film club and amateur dramatics. However, the reporting of data is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, stating that amateur dramatics dropped to 5 in 2020 is unclear, and the description of the musical performance starting at 0 in 2005 is not fully integrated into the overall trend analysis. The overview is somewhat weak, as it focuses on specific data points rather than identifying the broader trends or significant shifts across the 20-year period. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant changes and that all data points mentioned are clearly linked to the correct years and categories.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions. Phrases like 'More in-depth it can be seen' and 'Further examination shows' are used mechanically. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when comparing different activities. For instance, the transition between the film club and martial arts lacks a clear cohesive link, making the flow feel disjointed. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas more naturally, and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There is a heavy reliance on basic verbs like 'increased', 'decreased', and 'rose'. Some word choices are unnatural, such as 'members quantity is 0' or 'table tennis contestants'. There are also minor errors in word formation and collocation, such as 'participants of film club' instead of 'participants in the film club'. To improve, incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable', and pay closer attention to prepositions and noun-verb collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect article usage ('the 2000 and 2020'), punctuation errors (the semicolon after 'Melbourne'), and subject-verb agreement problems ('participants of film club... were 65'). Some sentences are poorly constructed, such as 'Whereas table tennis contestants rose from 25 to 50 in the figure in 2020', which is a sentence fragment. To reach a higher band, focus on improving sentence construction, ensuring correct punctuation, and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy.
