Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, outlining overall trends and specific data points for different activities such as the film club, musical performances, and table tennis. The overview successfully highlights the general trajectory of the data over the 20-year period. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and omissions in reporting specific data points, such as stating that musical performances 'started from zero in 2000' when the visual data indicates a non-zero starting point. Furthermore, the description becomes overly granular in places while missing broader comparative insights between activities. Overall, it addresses the requirements of Task 1 adequately and presents a clear, albeit basic, summary of the information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Overall' are used to structure the text, though they are somewhat mechanical. Paragraphing is attempted appropriately to divide the introduction, overview, and body sections. However, referencing and logical progression within body paragraphs occasionally falter, as seen in the dense and slightly disjointed sentence structures used to describe the film club trends. While the overall arrangement is coherent, the flow is disrupted by clunky transitions and occasional ambiguity in pronoun or time reference.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to incorporate less common items such as 'participants', 'significant rise', 'dramatically increased', and 'ups and downs'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'quantity of table tennis people' instead of 'number of participants in table tennis', and 'continusely' (continuous spelling error). The range is sufficient to convey the general message, but inaccuracies in word formation and collocation prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Spelling errors like 'continusely' slightly detract from the overall lexical impression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and time-phrased introductions. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of participants... were' instead of 'was'), awkward phrasing ('were almost same'), and punctuation lapses. Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, and the reader can follow the intended meaning. The grammatical range is sufficient for a Band 6, featuring standard past tense simple structures alongside some complex time clauses.
