Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting on the different activities at the social centre from 2000 to 2020. An overview is attempted, pointing out that the film club had the most participants overall. Key features and comparisons are made across the categories, such as table tennis experiencing a rapid rise and amateur dramatics decreasing. However, some data points are described a bit imprecisely or awkwardly, such as describing musical performances as having '0 number' in 2000 and martial arts ending at 'same almost 35 number of participants'. Additionally, the overview could be more comprehensive by capturing a second major trend alongside the film club. Nonetheless, all categories are addressed, earning a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is arranged with an introduction containing the overview, followed by a single large body paragraph. Paragraphing is weak because the entire body of data is crammed into one block rather than being divided logically, which impacts the overall organization. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes repetitive or awkwardly introduced, such as 'Now turning into the details', 'In addition', 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Finally'. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of paragraph breaks detracts from the logical progression and overall cohesion, placing this response at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe trends with terms like 'significant feature', 'constant value', 'rapid rise', and 'rapidly decreases'. However, there is a lack of flexibility and precision, leading to repetitive phrasing such as 'number of candidates' and 'number of participants' used repeatedly. There are also unnatural collocations and word choices, such as 'constant value 65', 'drop down', '0 number', and 'stable activity has under 40 number of candidates'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the limited control of less common lexical items caps this score at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Overall, it can be seen that the most significant feature is film club which has most number of participants...' However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including punctuation issues (missing spaces after commas, a comma splice in the introduction), missing articles ('is film club', 'has most number'), and tense inconsistencies or clunky phrasing like 'with end it at same almost 35 number of participants'. Because errors occur frequently and occasionally make sentences clumsy, the grammar aligns with Band 5.0.
