Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student successfully reports the main features and makes relevant comparisons across the five activities shown in the graph. The overview is somewhat integrated into the introduction and body paragraphs, capturing the highest participant rates for the film club and the general trends for table tennis, martial arts, amateur dramatics, and musical performances. Key figures and percentages, such as the film club remaining above 60 percent and musical performances starting around 2005, are appropriately cited. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reading the data, such as referring to 'the number of 10.5%' when the scale represents percentages, and some data points are slightly vague. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed, and the response meets the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall arrangement and logical progression, moving from an introductory statement to specific body paragraphs detailing each activity. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different data categories. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly deployed, as seen with transitions like 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover'. Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, for example, the connection between sentences in the second paragraph regarding table tennis. While cohesive relationships are generally maintained, the occasional clunky linking phrases place this performance securely in the Band 6.0 range.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive terms such as 'fluctuates', 'significant growth', and 'declined considerably'. However, there are several lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'presents an information', 'Most popular activity in which people taking a part', and 'arrived at the number of'. Spelling is generally accurate, but inappropriate word forms and articles slightly impede precise communication. This corresponds to the descriptors for Band 5.5, as the vocabulary is minimally adequate with noticeable errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and temporal markers like 'throughout the years of 2000 to 2020 comparative to other activities'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with missing articles ('presents an information', 'Most popular activity'), incorrect verb forms ('people taking a part', 'table tennis fluctuates' in past context), and awkward prepositions. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. Control of grammar and punctuation aligns best with a Band 5.0.
