IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates the changes in participant numbers across five different activities at a Melbourne social centre from 2000 to 2002.
Overall, film club consistently remained the most popular activity, while participation in table tennis and musical performances showed the most dramatic increases over the given period.
In 2000, film club attracted around 65 participants; this number then dropped slightly to 60 in 2010 before returning to approximately the initial number by 2020. With 40 participants, martial arts was the second most popular activity in 2000, but lost its position to table tennis by 2015.
With just 15 participants in 2000, table tennis quickly became increasingly popular over the years, surpassing martial arts in 2015 and reaching more than 50 participants by 2020. Before 2010, almost no one had been interested in in musical performances; from this year onwards, however, participation in this activity grew consistently, surpassing amateur dramatics in 2015 and ending at around 20 participants in 2020. The number of people engaged in amateur dramatics, despite an initial rise, experienced an overall downward trend, falling to under 10 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph while making relevant comparisons between the activities. The overview clearly highlights the overall trends, such as the film club's continuous popularity and the dramatic rises in table tennis and musical performances. Data points are accurately cited to support the statements, such as the film club starting at around 65 participants in 2000 and table tennis surging to more than 50 participants by 2020. The information is well-selected, and the task is fully covered without any major omissions, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph stating the graph's purpose, followed by a concise overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs grouping the data logically. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2000', 'With just 15 participants', and 'from this year onwards' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function in structuring the report. Referencing is clear throughout, contributing to the seamless flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a wide and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic report. Phrases such as 'consistently remained', 'most dramatic increases', 'downward trend', and 'surpassing' show a strong command of lexical items related to trend analysis. Collocations are generally natural, and there are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While there could be slightly more sophisticated uncommon lexical items to push toward a top-tier band, the range used here is fully sufficient for precision and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
A good variety of complex sentence structures is employed throughout the response, including participial phrases and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'With 40 participants, martial arts was...', 'Before 2010, almost no one had been interested...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly. Control of tense and grammar is strong, particularly when describing past and extended trends over the twenty-year period. Only minor slips might occur, but grammar never impedes understanding.
