Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the entire period from 2000 to 2020. The response provides a clear overview in the second paragraph, highlighting that the film club was most popular, dramatics declined, and table tennis grew noticeably. Specific data points are correctly cited to support these trends, such as the film club starting at around 64 in 2000 and table tennis rising sharply to 53 in 2020. The information is accurately reported based on the graph, meeting the requirements of Band 7 by fully covering all key features with appropriate supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Ideas are grouped appropriately into paragraphs: an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs examining specific activities. Cohesive devices and transition markers such as 'while', 'on the other hand', 'before rising to', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to show relationships between data points and connect ideas. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, resulting in a coherent text that is easy to follow, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, using appropriate terms such as 'participants', 'significant decline', 'noticeable growth', 'fluctuated', and 'rose sharply'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary items and functional verbs to describe trends. Word choice is generally precise, and spelling is accurate throughout the text. While the lexical range is not particularly advanced or expansive, it is fully adequate to convey the information clearly, fitting comfortably into the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, solidifying a Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student employs a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including dependent clauses and participle phrases (e.g., 'starting at about 36 and ending at a similar level'). There is a minor capitalization error at the beginning of the second paragraph ('the film club was...'), but punctuation and grammar are otherwise well controlled. Frequent error-free sentences appear throughout the response, and grammatical errors do not impede communication at all. This demonstrates strong control over basic structures and a reasonable ability to handle complex forms, matching the Band 7 criteria.
