Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task by selecting, reporting, and comparing the main features of the graph. The overview clearly highlights key trends, such as the film club remaining the most popular activity and table tennis demonstrating significant growth. Specific data points are integrated accurately to support the comparisons, such as the final figures in 2020 for the film club at approximately 66 and table tennis at approximately 55. The information is relevant and well-selected, meeting the requirements of Academic Task 1 effectively. Minor omissions in exact initial figures for the film club do not detract from the overall strong performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It begins with an appropriate introduction, followed by a clear overall summary paragraph, and then delves into more detailed body information. Cohesive devices such as 'Whereas', 'In contrast', and 'Meanwhile' are used effectively to signal contrasts and relationships between data series. Paragraphing is handled well, dividing the overview from the detailed body sentences appropriately. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions could be slightly more natural.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'substantial decline', 'significant growth', and 'fluctuated'. There is good control of functional language related to trends and data reporting. While some word choices are standard, the precision is generally adequate. Spelling and word choice are accurate, avoiding any impediment to communication. To reach higher bands, a wider variety of more sophisticated collocation could be integrated.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participial phrases effectively. Examples include 'Whereas Amateur dramatics experienced a substantial decline' and 'Further examination shows that the table tennis participants increased significantly'. There are frequent error-free sentences, alongside a few minor punctuation and grammatical slips, such as the missing year context in 'decreased slightly from 2000 to and then increased'. However, overall control of grammar and punctuation is strong and communication is never impeded.
