Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task well by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five activities between 2000 and 2020. An overview is successfully presented in the second paragraph, highlighting key trends such as the consistent prominence of the film club and the contrasting trajectories of amateur dramatics and musical performances. Data points are appropriately selected to support the descriptions, such as mentioning the starting and ending figures for table tennis and amateur dramatics. While the analysis is generally clear and accurate, the report occasionally lacks deeper synthesis of the data over the intermediate years, which keeps it from achieving the highest bands. Overall, the task is well addressed and the main features are clearly communicated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear overall progression. The introduction is followed by an overview paragraph, after which individual body paragraphs handle specific groupings of activities. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Finally'. However, there are some mechanical or awkward transitions, such as 'At the outset' and 'However, the participants of Amateur dramatics and table tennis illustrates', which make the cohesion feel slightly rigid in places. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points of comparison. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring the reader can easily follow the flow of information across the twenty-year timeline.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'conspicuous feature', 'upward trajectory', and 'enduring popularity'. However, there are noticeable lexical and collocation errors, such as 'shows a plunged' instead of 'shows a plunge', 'musical performances steadily gaining popularity' containing a grammatical slip in collocation, and 'reaching at a plateau' instead of 'reaching a plateau'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating an ability to construct subordinate clauses and comparative statements. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors involving subject-verb agreement and tense usage, such as 'Amateur dramatics shows a plunged', 'Film club had the highest number of participants almost 65 that drops steadily', and 'the participants of Amateur dramatics and table tennis illustrates'. Additionally, punctuation is occasionally faulty, leading to sentence fragments or run-on structures. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
