Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features with relevant comparisons. The response identifies key trends, such as the film club remaining the most popular activity and the substantial decline in amateur dramatics, alongside the significant growth in table tennis. Data points are accurately selected and cited to support the descriptions, for instance, noting approximately 64 participants for the film club and 55 for table tennis in 2020. The information is well-selected, effectively summarising the main features of the graph without unnecessary detail, thereby fully meeting the requirements of Task Achievement at a Band 7.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is divided into an introduction, an overall summary paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph, which ensures a structured layout. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader, such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'Further examination shows'. Paragraphing is managed effectively, and referencing is clear throughout the text. While cohesion is sometimes slightly formulaic, the logical flow and progression fully satisfy the descriptors for Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, such as 'substantial decline', 'most significant growth', and 'fluctuated'. Less common lexical items are attempted with good awareness of style and collocation, as seen in phrases like 'remained within the range of approximately' and 'rose gradually'. There are occasional slight awkwardness in word choice, such as 'Musical performance member was 0', but these do not impede communication. The lexical range is adequate for clear and precise reporting, earning a solid Band 7.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response makes use of a variety of complex structures alongside simple sentence forms, displaying good control of grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex structures include 'the number of participants in the film club decreased slightly from 2000 to 2010, and then increased to around 64 in 2020' and 'overtook both Amateur dramatics and Martial arts members to approximately 55 in 2020'. There are frequent error-free sentences, and minor slips (such as the pluralisation in 'Musical performance member') do not impede communication. The overall control of grammar aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.
