The provided graph illustrates information on the number of participants for different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it can be observed at a glance that the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period whereas amateur dramatics experienced a substantial decline. In contrast, table tennis showed the most significant growth.

In more depth, it can be seen that the number of participants in the film club decreased slightly from 2000 to 2010, and then increased to around 64 in 2020. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task by providing a clear and comprehensive summary of the main features and trends shown in the graph. The overview is particularly strong, capturing the overarching trends such as the film club's enduring popularity, the substantial decline in amateur dramatics, and the significant growth in table tennis. Key data points, such as the peak of approximately 64 for the film club in 2020 and the rise of table tennis to around 55, are accurately reported and supported with relevant figures. The comparisons made throughout the response are apt and effectively highlight the contrasting trajectories of different activities. The content is well-developed, accurate, and completely relevant to the prompt, easily meeting the criteria for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader smoothly from the introduction to the general overview and then into the more detailed body paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with a clear introductory sentence followed by a distinct overview paragraph and a detailed body section. Cohesive devices are managed well, using phrases like 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Further examination' to structure the response effectively. However, the final body paragraph is slightly dense and could have been broken down further or separated to enhance readability and ensure even smoother progression. Nonetheless, the overall organisation is clear and progression is logical throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are used effectively to describe trends, such as 'substantial decline', 'significant growth', 'fluctuated', and 'rose gradually'. Collocations are mostly natural, and word choices appropriately reflect the graphic data without overly repetitive language. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To reach the higher bands, the integration of even more sophisticated or precise academic phrasing would be beneficial, but the current lexical control is solid and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating control over grammatical forms. Examples of complex sentences include 'While, participation in martial arts fluctuated, remaining within the range...' and subordinate clauses used effectively for comparison. The majority of sentences are error-free, with accurate tense usage for past data trends (e.g., 'decreased slightly', 'fell steadily'). Punctuation is generally sound, and minor structural slips are virtually non-existent. The grammar supports clear and precise communication throughout.
