Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student attempts to address the task by reporting on the main features of the graph, such as the trends for martial arts and the introduction of musical performances in 2005. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies and contradictions in the data reported. For instance, the student states that the film club had 'roughly 64 members through out the period', but then mentions it increased to 65 in 2020, while also confusing the categories and figures for amateur dramatics and table tennis later in the response (e.g., repeating amateur dramatics with conflicting numbers). While an overview is attempted, the data selection and reporting lack accuracy and clarity. Because of these noticeable inaccuracies in covering the prompt's details, the response achieves a Band 5.5 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response has an overall structure with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, though the grouping of information is somewhat confused by data inaccuracies. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'In contrast', and 'Meanwhile' are used to connect ideas, but their effectiveness is undermined by the confusing and contradictory data presented. Paragraphing is attempted, but the body paragraphs are disjointed due to mixed information about the different activities. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as repeating 'amateur dramatics' in different contexts with contradictory numbers. This level of organisation and cohesion aligns best with a Band 6.0 descriptor, where the overall arrangement is visible but cohesion is sometimes faulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words and phrases such as 'proportion', 'gradually', 'plummeted', 'fluctuated', and 'popularity'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as confusing 'proportion' and 'number', and awkward phrasings like 'reached year 2020'. Furthermore, spelling and word choice errors appear, though they do not completely impede communication. Less common lexical items are attempted with mixed success. Because the vocabulary is adequate yet contains noticeable errors and slight imprecisions in reporting statistical data, the lexical resource is graded at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Additionally, musical performances started in year 2005 and gradually the number of individuals that took part in it increased.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including missing prepositions, tense inconsistencies, and punctuation issues (e.g., comma splices and run-on sentences like 'In 2000, the film club had roughly 64 members through out the period this number saw a slight drop reaching year 2020 the number of members increased to 65'). Despite these errors, the meaning is generally decipherable, placing the grammatical performance firmly within the Band 5.5 descriptor due to frequent errors in complex structures.
