Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all the main activities presented in the graph, including the Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis, and Musical performances. The candidate attempts to report the main features and makes some basic comparisons, such as identifying the Film club as having the highest starting and ending figures, and noting the upward trends for Table tennis and Musical performances. However, the data reporting contains significant inaccuracies or awkward phrasing (e.g., stating Musical performances started at 'zero number of participants' and reached '18 number of participitants', and minor inaccuracies in data interpretation). Furthermore, the overview paragraph is vague and contains awkward lexical choices ('two number of participants', 'Amateur showed a lowest trend'). Consequently, the task is only partially addressed with limited data precision, corresponding to a Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is structured into four paragraphs, following a logical introduction, overview, and body detail format. However, the progression within and between sentences is often disrupted by mechanical or inaccurate cohesive devices. For example, the use of transitions like 'Moreover', 'Looking at the details', and 'In contrast' attempts to structure the text, but the internal logical flow is hindered by repetitive sentence structures and vague referencing. Paragraphing is attempted appropriately with a clear division between overview and details, but overall the coherence suffers from awkward phrasing and lack of smooth progression, aligning well with a Band 5.5 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary suited for basic reporting. Phrases like 'number of participants', 'rose steadily', and 'fell steadily' are overused throughout the text. There are several noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'two number of participants such as Musical performances and Tables tennis experienced a upward trend' (where 'an' is missing and 'two' is used incorrectly), 'Amateur showed a lowest trend', and spelling slips like 'participitants'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, frequent lexical inaccuracies and a lack of flexibility restrict the score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as starting sentences with introductory time markers ('in 2000, ...') and subordinate clauses ('While Amateur showed...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in articles, prepositions, and verb complements (e.g., 'rose steady to reach at', 'fell steadily reach at', 'fell steadily reach at 8 number of participants'). Errors such as missing articles ('an upward trend') and incorrect verb forms ('reach at' instead of 'reaching' or 'to reach') are frequent and occasionally cause confusion for the reader, though communication of the main data trends is generally maintained. This reflects the characteristics of a Band 5.0 response.
