Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses the main features of the prompt by summarising the data for all five activities across the period from 2000 to 2020. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the overall trends of the categories. Comparisons are made where relevant, and key data points such as the starting and ending figures for Film club and Table tennis are mentioned. However, there are some inaccurate descriptions of the data, such as stating that the Film club 'fell steadily reach at 64' (it actually rose from around 65 to roughly 75 or fluctuated depending on the visual, but the description lacks precise data reporting in places). Furthermore, 'Musical performances started at no number of participants in 2005' captures a key feature, but some data points lack clarity. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task appropriately, earning a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different features of the graph. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes faulty and mechanical, such as 'Looking at the details, in 2000...' and the awkward linking phrases used to introduce data points. Referencing and progression are sometimes disrupted by grammatical awkwardness, but the logical flow remains generally clear to the reader, aligning with the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like 'fluctuations', 'stable', 'steadily', and 'dramatically'. However, there are notable lexical and collocation errors, such as 'two number of participants' instead of 'the number of participants', 'fell steadily reach at', and 'no number of participants'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5, as the vocabulary control lacks the precision and flexibility required for Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'While Martial arts stated at... and minor fluctuations reach at...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, containing frequent errors such as missing prepositions, incorrect verb forms ('fell steadily reach at', 'minor fluctuations reach at', 'dramatically rise'), and faulty article use ('the for different activities'). While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur with high frequency across almost every sentence, preventing the student from achieving a higher score and placing the response firmly at Band 5.0.
