Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants for five different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, maximum participations were recorded in the film club. Table Tennis observed a significant increase by the end of the period. Oppositely, participations in the amateur dramatics declined substantially over the end of the timeline. No participants registered in the musical performances in the starting five years of the period.

Number of participants in the film club noticed minor fluctuations, but remained steady between 60 and 70 throughout the time frame. Similarly, number of participants in the martial arts also stayed in between 30 and 40, observing little variations.

Although participants in the amatuer dramatics rose from 25 to almost 30, between 2000 and 2005,but dropped considerably throughout the timeline, with less than 10 participants by 2020. In contrast, the table tennis participants were approximately 20 in 2010, which jumped significantly upto 50 by 2020. In the starting five years zero participations were recorded in the muscial performances, but after 2005, participations kept on increasing gradually and were more than 10 at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main trends and making relevant comparisons across the five activities. The response correctly identifies the film club as having the highest participation, notes the significant increase in table tennis, and highlights the lack of participation in musical performances during the first five years. Key features are supported with data from the graph, such as 'approximately 20 in 2010, which jumped significantly up to 50 by 2020'. The overview is clear and the overall summary is well-integrated, though a slightly sharper contrast between the rising and falling trends could have elevated the response further. Overall, the task is covered well, meeting all criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response presents a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction and an overview, followed by body paragraphs grouping the activities sensibly. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'Overall', 'Similarly', 'Although', and 'In contrast', which help guide the reader through the data comparisons. However, there are minor mechanical errors in cohesion and referencing, such as 'over the end of the timeline' and 'in the starting five years', which sound slightly unnatural. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, ensuring the information is easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends and figures, employing terms like 'minor fluctuations', 'declined substantially', 'jumped significantly', and 'increasing gradually'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'participations' (participation is typically uncountable in this context), 'Oppositely' (instead of 'conversely' or 'in contrast'), and the spelling typo 'amatuer'. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, fitting comfortably into the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses ('Although participants in the amateur dramatics rose...'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as missing articles ('Number of participants'), incorrect prepositions ('in the starting five years'), and spacing issues after commas (e.g., 'In contrast, the table tennis'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the basic meaning remains clear. The control of grammar is sufficient for a Band 6.0.
