Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all the main activities presented in the graph, including the Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis, and Musical performances. An overview is provided right at the beginning, noting that the film club held the highest number of participants while amateur dramatics had the least. Key trends and comparisons are highlighted across the 2000 to 2020 timeframe, such as the dramatic rise in table tennis participation. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting specific data points, for instance claiming that martial arts in 2000 was 37% and then referencing 36% without a clear distinction, and describing the drop in amateur dramatics as 'about 5%' rather than dropping TO 5%. Nevertheless, the overall requirements of summarizing the main features and making comparisons are met, placing this response at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overall summary, and subsequent body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the data, using phrases like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Moving towards rest of the information'. However, some cohesive links and referencing are somewhat mechanical or awkward, such as 'Then after' and 'Which was the same number of the share recorded', which slightly disrupts the natural flow. Paragraphing is used adequately to structure the response, ensuring a coherent overall arrangement that earns a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'drastic change', and 'participants'. There are, however, several lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, including 'took a part' instead of 'took part', 'took participate', 'seen mild hike', and 'least interested area of activity'. Despite these vocabulary errors and word-choice inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the range is sufficient to meet the Band 6.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Examples of errors include missing articles ('in the activity of the film club'), incorrect prepositional usage ('decreased at 60%', 'decreased about 5%'), and fragmented structures ('Which was the same number of the share recorded in martial arts activity'). Verb tense and voice issues also appear, such as 'proportion of participants recorded' instead of 'were recorded'. While these errors in grammar and punctuation are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication, supporting a Band 5.5 score.
