Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main activities, summarising overall trends, and making relevant comparisons between the figures from 2000 to 2020. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, which correctly highlights the upward trend in table tennis and the downward trend in amateur dramatics. Key features are reported, such as table tennis starting at 15 and reaching 52, and film club fluctuating around 62 to 65. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reporting specific data points from the graph (for instance, stating film club fluctuated between 65 and 62 rather than reading the starting point accurately, and typos like '205' instead of '2005'). Overall, the response meets the requirements of Task 1 well, earning a band score of 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement with a distinct introduction, overview paragraph, and body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', 'At the beginning of period', and 'by contrast' are used to signal logical relationships and guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body points. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty, such as abrupt transitions between sentences and mechanical linking in places. Furthermore, the lack of punctuation control at times disrupts the logical flow. Nevertheless, the progression of information remains coherent throughout, justifying a band score of 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'upward trend', 'downward trend', 'fluctuated', and 'gradually'. There are, however, frequent spelling errors ('tannis' instead of 'tennis', 'participents' instead of 'participants', 'fluctated', 'partcipants') and word-form issues ('musical performances slightly upward' instead of 'saw a slight upward trend'). While these vocabulary and spelling errors are noticeable and detract from precision, they do not severely impede communication because the context remains clear. This lexical profile aligns well with the descriptors for Band 5.5, which balances adequate task coverage against frequent lexical slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating introductory clauses and time markers ('At the beginning of period, table tannis stood at...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors such as missing articles ('at social centre', 'at beginning of period'), subject-verb agreement issues ('The graph illustrate'), and awkward phrasing ('with little bite change'). Punctuation and capitalization errors also appear throughout the text. Complex structures are frequently faulty or awkwardly constructed. Because errors are frequent and cause some distraction for the reader while remaining mostly understandable, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
