Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, identifying general trends such as the film club having the most participants and musical performances having the fewest. However, there are significant limitations in reporting data accurately. For instance, the student states that 'Film studio had the highest paticipants and it moderately increase in 2020,' which contains a typo and lacks specific supporting data points from the chart. Furthermore, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 143 words. This negative length constraint requires a penalty to the Task Achievement score, as the task is not fully satisfied due to the word count deficit. Consequently, the score is pinned at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organized into basic paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific activities. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting a sentence with 'Whereas, Martial arts had...' where 'whereas' is grammatically misplaced as a conjunction connecting independent sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the mechanical transitions ('Looking at the figure for 2000', 'Whereas') result in a somewhat repetitive structure. Paragraphing is present, but overall logical flow is disrupted by syntactic errors and weak linking phrases. This performance aligns well with the Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic description of trends, utilizing terms like 'participants', 'moderately increase', 'fluctuated', and 'decline'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'paticipants' instead of participants, 'continously start growing' instead of continuously starting to grow, and 'taking participate' instead of participating. The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with frequent reliance on basic verbs and nouns. Less common lexical items are attempted but feature inaccuracies in collocation and form. These errors occasionally cause strain or require the reader to reinterpret the intended meaning, placing this firmly at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense and aspect, such as 'Musical performances was started in 2005 and people started taking participate in it till 2020,' which mixes passive and active voice incorrectly. Other errors include subject-verb agreement issues and incorrect prepositions or conjunctions ('it is fluctuated', 'it continuosly decline till 2020'). While the meaning can generally be parsed, these frequent grammatical errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a Band 6.
