Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying and reporting the main features of the graph regarding participant numbers across different activities from 2000 to 2020. The student makes relevant comparisons, such as noting that the film club had the highest initial number of participants at around 65, while table tennis grew dramatically from zero to 55 by 2020. Key trends are highlighted, including fluctuations in the film club and the decline in amateur dramatics. Although some specific data points contain minor inaccuracies or awkward phrasing (e.g., 'table tennis had no participants' initially), the overall overview and reporting of main trends are sufficiently clear to meet the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs detailing specific data and trends, and concluding with a brief summary. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the text, such as 'To commence with', 'In contrast', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, and some sentences lack smooth transitions. For instance, the transition into the second paragraph feels abrupt, and referencing errors occur in the progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately, resulting in an overall coherent structure that earns a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'fluctuated', 'dramatic growth', and 'steadly'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'clud' instead of 'club', 'material arts' instead of 'martial arts', 'Amateur dramtics', 'steadly' instead of 'steadily', and 'delcined' instead of 'declined'. These errors do not seriously impede communication since the overall meaning remains clear, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5 due to the frequency of spelling slips and minor inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'while Table tennis had no participants' and 'starting from zero in 2005 and rising sharply'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense consistency, prepositions, and article usage, such as 'illustrates the information on number of participants', 'remaind stable peaks', 'dropimg slightly', and 'the table tennis become much more popular'. Punctuation and capitalization also show inconsistencies. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist across multiple sentences, placing the performance firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
